Blå Stjärnan Animal Hospital, Sweden’s largest veterinary hospital run by a non-profit foundation, recently moved into new, purpose-built premises in Mölndal. The project was developed in collaboration with property owner Castellum and interior architects Modesty Concept, with a clear focus on sustainability, hygiene, and design functionality.

To meet the hospital’s strict hygiene standards and operational needs, the team selected Tarkett’s iQ Granit Acoustic — a high-performance, recyclable vinyl flooring solution that is easy to clean and cost-effective to maintain.

“As a long-term property owner, we want to make choices that stand the test of time — for both the environment and the economy. Factors such as low climate impact, long lifespan, and the possibility of recycling played a decisive role when selecting flooring. iQ Granit met all the requirements,” says Niclas Hultberg, Project Manager at Castellum.

Tarkett’s iQ Granit is a flooring solution that combines low climate impact with exceptional resistance to wear, dirt, and bacteria.

Manufactured in Ronneby, Sweden, it is designed to be recycled multiple times into new flooring — without compromising on quality. The recycling process also takes place locally in Ronneby.

Hygienic and Hardwearing Flooring for Demanding Environments

At Blue Star Animal Hospital, which manages daily operations, the focus was on workplace safety, hygiene, operational efficiency, and cost control.

In veterinary hospitals, floors are exposed to intense wear and tear — they must be durable, easy to clean, and hygienically safe.

“Our operations have high hygiene requirements. We need floors that can withstand tough conditions and are easy to clean. iQ Granit is the perfect fit for our facility,” says Erika Gustavsson, Facility Manager at Blue Star Animal Hospital.

The floor’s surface treatment makes it harder for dirt and bacteria to adhere. No wax or polish is needed — the surface can be dry-polished back to its original condition. This results in lower maintenance costs and reduced chemical use, making it both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Design That Feels Natural and Welcoming

Another key aspect of the project was to create a welcoming atmosphere. With the interior concept developed by Modesty Concept, the goal was to move away from the traditional sterile hospital environment and instead create a space that feels naturally warm and safe. The floors were installed in organic shapes, and visitors are greeted by a stylised star in the entrance — a nod to the hospital’s name. Natural tones in blue, green, and brown bring a sense of calm to both pet owners and staff.

Details that make a difference. The result is a veterinary hospital that successfully combines sustainability, functionality, and comfort.
